It is estimated that 33% of adult women suffer from some sort of bladder problems. The most common ones are stress, urge, and mixed incontinence.
What is Stress incontinence? Stress incontinence involves leakage of urine during activities that increase abdominal pressure, such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, or lifting heavy objects. It occurs due to weakened pelvic floor muscles or tissues that support the bladder and urethra.
What is Urge incontinence? Urge incontinence, on the other hand, is characterized by a sudden and strong urge to urinate followed by involuntary leakage of urine. This occurs due to involuntary contractions of the bladder muscles (detrusor muscles) causing the bladder to empty even when it's not full.
What is Mixed incontinence? Mixed incontinence refers to a combination of two types of urinary incontinence: stress incontinence and urge incontinence. This means that individuals with mixed incontinence experience symptoms of both conditions simultaneously.
In mixed incontinence, a person may experience urine leakage both with physical activities (stress incontinence) and with sudden urges to urinate (urge incontinence). This combination of symptoms can be challenging to manage and may require a comprehensive approach involving lifestyle modifications, pelvic floor exercises, behavioral therapies, medications, or sometimes surgical interventions depending on the severity and underlying causes of each type of incontinence.
